Introduction     Posted on 02/11/2005
The shape of a kite board requires the usage of different materials and tools. They can be classified as follow :
• Safety/Protection,
• Equipment,
• Shape tools,
• Composite raw materials

Safety     Posted on 02/11/2005
The materials used are dangerous, harmful and noxious, specially the epoxy which has no smell (slightly ammoniated). The usage of resins is not the only safety risk of shape activity. The sandpappering of the Airex core or the board have to be taken into consideration for you health. Those materials have to be used with a high level of Individual Protections :
• the eyes,
• the respiratory tract,
• the skin.

To have the maximum of safety, you must use the appropriate protection equipments.

Equipment - Scoop Table :     Posted on 02/11/2005
Whatever you want to do in term of TwinType / Mutant, a scoop table is a must !.

To create your own scoop table, the more simple way is to use :

• 3 or 4 plywood boards of 10mm thick by 160 X 20cm
• 1 fibreboard of 8mm thick by 160 X 70cm
• some wood screws

Then, you have to :
• cut the 3 or 4 plywood boards of 10mm thick to get the right scoop shape.
• Then assemble the fibreboard of 8mm with the wood screws with the help of the pre-shape plywood boards as guide to get the template.

If you want to make a lot of boards (series shape for addicted guys), an adjustable scoop table would be helpful, check the kiteboardbuilder.com :

Equipment - Vacuum pump :     Posted on 03/11/2005
If you want to make a board under vaccum, a vaccum pump is needed. Fridge compressors are the right tool . The vaccum regulation is highly recommanded. Most of the freeshapers are using a vaccum between -0.5 to -0.7bar.
I designed an electronic manometer to do that. Every usefull data are in the following page :  http://wishbone.free.fr/fr_manometre.html
But few people are designing electronics circuits, the best and simplest way is to use a vaccum switch like the one sold by
[turl]farnell http://fr.farnell.com:

To check the vaccum, you can also find in Farnell website [turl]farnell http://fr.farnell.com a negatif manometer :

For the electronic scheme, this is [turl]Here http://mardo.club.fr/mardo/pump2.jpg on Mardo web site.

Equipment - Oven :     Posted on 21/11/2005
To maximize the strength of a composite board, epoxy resin MUST be well polymerized. Depending on the resin type, several processes exist : UV rays or hot temperature.
For our resin type, we need hot temperature. I will show you how to build an oven. This is simple to build to use and CHEAP/not expensive.
You will need :
• some wood boards. One of them must be 150cm long,
• 2 lamp sockets,
• wire + male plug,
• thermal insulating thin film (about 1.5m square shape piece).

You have to assemble everything following the next instructions :

[1][2]
four_detail.jpg
[3][4]
four_ferme.jpg
[/4]
To use it :
a good "cooking" is 6 to 8hours of heat between 50°C - 60°C (conversion to be done in °F). If the external temperature is too high, you can reduce the internal heat by removing one of the 2 lamps..
